A new survey by online food ordering service Seamless suggests that the way to an employees heart – or at least their loyalty – is through their stomachs.
In the survey, which included 1225 full-time workers, food was ranked as the second most important work perk, losing out only to a gym/yoga membership and food-based benefits were ranked third behind flexible vacation policies and gym memberships in terms of what would make workers more inclined to rate their companies highly in a “Best Places to Work” survey. In addition, of the employees polled:
§ 57% said food-based perks would make them feel more valued by their employers
§ 50% indicated that food-based perks would make them more satisfied with their company
§ 50% said they believe sharing a meal with colleagues helps foster better working relationships, and
§ 41% said if their current employer provided meals, they’d be less inclined to accept a job offer at a company that does not.
Luckily, Seamless notes that food at work is on the uptick, with the number of employees reporting that they receive regular lunches at work climbing from 5% in 2013 to 11% this year. In addition, 11% more workers reported receiving some type of food-based perk in 2014.
As nice as it can be to feed your workers, Suzanne Lucas, who runs the popular Evil HR Lady website, warns that it’s important to keep people with dietary restrictions in mind when ordering food or else risk building animosity if you isolate certain workers. As such, she recommends that you switch things up on occasion so everyone can participate in the food perk.
