What is the Key to Employee Retention?

A staggering 3.5 million Americans quit their job EACH MONTH in 2008—marking the highest rate of turnover since the oh-so-fun recession of 2001, according to a recent report from the National Bureau of Labor Statistics. Further, analysts believe that the trend will continue as workers continue to grow weary with stagnant wages and the threat of yet another economic recession.

Luckily, LinkedIn dug in its heels and flipped the tables, this time to figure out what makes workers want to stay. Topping that list, rather surprisingly, was the concept of continued learning. Indeed, 94% of workers suggested that they would stay in their jobs if their company helped them to close their skills gap. Workers and especially the younger generations are looking for ways to improve, not only in their current job but acquire the skills necessary to advance up the career ladder and become a more successful person within your company.

So, if providing education is such a silver bullet for stopping the revolving door, why aren’t more companies offering these types of learning opportunities? As with many things in business, it all comes down to budget. However, while almost half of companies cited budget as a limiting factor in 2017, this year, that figure has shrunk to just 27% as businesses slowly start making learning a priority. Many businesses are shifting away from an in-person model of training and exploring more of the virtual world in the form of tele-trainings, online modules, and other web-based content.
